Football Wins Season Opener 47-7 Over Madonna (JV)
LIVONIA -- The Community Christian College football team (1-0) notched a 47-7 triumph on the road over Madonna University (JV) Sunday evening to begin the 2025 campaign. The win is the biggest margin of victory in Community Christian College's history.
It was hard to find a mistake throughout the game, as the quarterback play was phenomenal from top to bottom. Carson Thornton threw 16/21 for 274 yards and 4 touchdowns through 2 and half quarters, before Marvell Baker stepped in and passed 5/5 for 70 yards and a TD. Thornton also rushed for a TD to add to the shellacking.
The Lions rushed for 148 yards on the evening, led by Sophomore Lenell Martin who ran 37 yards on 5 attempts. He was 1 of 10 rushers on the evening, displaying the vast depth this roster has in the ground game.
Adrian Barnes was the favorite target of the night, going deep on multiple catches, and scoring on 3 of them. He finished with 123 yards on 5 catches, and helped contribute to an overall 13.2 yards per pass play throughout the night. The offense in total achieved just below 500 yards of offense.
Both Thornton and Barnes are ranked in the top 5 among Division I JUCOs, the former ranked for passing yards and TDs, while the latter scored the most touchdowns among any receiver so far this season.
Despite not playing in the 1st quarter, James Burnley finished with a team-high 6 tackles, and nabbed an interception as well. Antonio Jones, who doubled as the kickoff specialist, also stole a possession away from Madonna.
It was a huge win for Community Christian against a 4-year scholarship program, and they will look to continue the momentum against the #1 team in DIII, the College of DuPage. That game will kickoff at 12pm from Renaissance HS, live broadcasted on youtube.com/@CCCLions.
