Women's Basketball Season Preview
In a new era of DC3 Women's Basketball, Evan Fosha's team went 0-for-4 in preseason games against similarly ranked talent. Many people would see that as a failure, but I would argue it's good to see where you need to improve in a blunt fashion so early in the season.
With only 11 rostered players available to play this season, the first challenge this team will face is staying healthy. If even one player goes down, the bench becomes very thin and it can become difficult to pace yourselves throughout the 30 game season. The benefit to having a smaller team though, is that it can become easier to develop chemistry with your teammates since you share the court together so often. Though the roster is slim, the talent throughout the roster is mighty.
Kindall Hightower re-ups with Detroit for her 3rd season, showing some impressive on-ball defense this past month. This is no shock, as she was a steal machine for Ecorse HS her senior year. The Redshirt Sophomore averaged 4.2 Points per Game 2 seasons ago, and it would not be shocking if she doubled upon those numbers this upcoming year. She'll look to play on the wing as the next two players will handle the ball for the offense.
Brianna Williams was a standout player on a poor Pontiac HS team for the past 2 seasons, and she will look to be an immediate impact player for DC3. Her ball-handling has been decisive, and she has shown an ability to be a vocal leader on-the-court. She scored double-digits on her best days for the Phoenix, and fans can expect more of the same in Detroit.
Zipporah Johnson transfers back to Metro Detroit from Kankakee CC in Illinois, where she didn't play often enough to make a difference. She looks to prove her former coaches wrong, as she figures to be a key contributer for Community Christian, where she'll play among some of her former teammates from Ecorse as well. Her defense will be a calling card, as well as her ability to bury shots from deep.
Any good coach will tell you that success is a natural conclusion when you work hard for something. Coach Fosha echoed the same, saying that they're "taking this ground zero team as high off the ground as we can!"
DC3 Women's Basketball will open their season on the road in a doubleheader with the men against Kirtland CC on November 2nd, and will open at home at 1pm on November 9th vs Delta College. That game will take place at Center Line Prep, and we'll have full coverage on youtube.com/@CCCLions.
