Football Falls on the Road to #8 Garden City
Garden City, KS - Community Christian (Mich.) faced a tough test on the road Saturday morning, falling 89-0 to Garden City Community College at Broncbuster Stadium. The Broncos came out fast and never looked back, using a balanced rushing and passing attack to hand the Lions their fourth loss of the season.
Garden City struck early with a 73-yard touchdown run on their second play from scrimmage, then followed up with a 37-yard scoring strike to build a 13-0 first-quarter lead. The hosts exploded in the second quarter with six touchdowns, including three on the ground and two through the air to take a commanding 55-0 advantage into halftime.
Community Christian's defense continued to fight through all four quarters, recording five tackles for loss and forcing Garden City to settle for a pair of field goals in the third period. Norman Adams led the way with a team-high nine total tackles, while James Burnley added eight stops and Danero Harris broke up a pass in coverage.
Offensively, quarterback Marvell Baker threw for 97 yards, connecting frequently with Lorenzo Garcia, who led the team with seven receptions for 56 yards. Trey West chipped in with 37 receiving yards on four catches. Myron Mayberry paced the rushing attack with 15 yards on eight carries.
Despite the result, the Lions showed resilience late in the game, stringing together multiple first downs in the fourth quarter and continuing to battle in all three phases.
Community Christian (2-4) will look to regroup as they prepare to return home and play Hocking College, in an attempt to sweep their rivals for the first time in school history. That game begins at 1pm at Renaissance HS.
