Lady Lions Squeak Out Victory vs Alpena
DETROIT -- With three in double figures, the Community Christian College Women's Basketball team closed out Saturday's win over Alpena Community College with a technical free throw make from Brianna Williams. Up nineteen at one point, the Lady Lions were able to hold on for the victory.
The win was the second at DC3 for Head Coach Evan Fosha.
Three players finished with a double-double for the Lady Lions, including Williams, Aqierra Hinton, and Dasia Croft. They finished with 15, 12, and 10 points, respectively.
Alpena got out to an early 6-2 lead, but Community Christian settled into the contest after 6-0 run fueled by drives to the paint. Closing the quarter on an And-One from Croft, it was tied, 11-11.
In the second quarter, DC3 would continue to make their presence known from the free throw line, making 3-of-6. The Lumberjacks didn't have a single attempt at this point. The Lady Lions led 28-18 at the half.
Community Christian had the first nine points of the third quarter, providing a welcomed cushion on the scoreboard. Trailing by nineteen, the Lumberjacks tried to regain momentum with two 3-pointers. Undaunted, the Lady Lions answered with a 3-pointer from Hinton. Still, Alpena wouldn't go away, making it a 4-point game going into the 4th.
Up 42-38, Alpena started getting foul calls and making their shots, now tied at 44. The free throw battle swung back and forth, until Dasia Croft made a tough layup to put her team up 52-50 with a minute to go. ACC answered back on the other side, tying the game at 52 with 31 seconds to go. After a failed inbound pass, Alpena took possession with 1 second separating the game and shot clock. They were unable to get a shot off, giving the Lady Lions the ball back with 1.4 seconds. The Alpena HC took a timeout with the impression that the game was heading to overtime, and he did not have any timeouts left. This gave DC3 two technical free throw shots and possession, where Bri Williams would knock the second of two down to sneak away with the victory.
Though the Lady Lions shot 12 more free throws, both teams made 16 each. The win makes Community Christian above .500 at home.
DC3 returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Edison State. That contest tips off at 6 p.m.
