Bio
Matt Johnston has been appointed Head Football Coach at Community Christian College after serving as the program’s Defensive Coordinator.
“Coach Johnston is a proven winner and is the right person to lead this program moving forward.” stated Athletic Director Jeff Reardon.
Prior to rejoining the staff as C.C.C., Johnston served as the Defensive Coordinator at Detroit’s Martin Luther King Jr. High School and helped lead the Crusaders to the state championship game during the 2024 season. He has taught at MLK since 2015. Prior to his coaching stint at King High School, he spent seven seasons on staff at Wayne State University (Detroit) working with the linebacker corp. He also has collegiate coaching stops at William Penn University (Iowa), Kentucky Christian University, and Manchester University (Indiana). Johnston played football at Adrian College where he was a three-year letter winner.
Coach Johnston spent the 2023 season as the Defensive Coordinator at C.C.C. and was instrumental in helping to lay the foundation to build the football program. Over the course of his career, he has coached numerous all-conference and All-American performers on the field, as well as mentoring a great number of academic all-conference recipients. In addition, he led bible study groups at both Wayne State University and Community Christian College.
A strong advocate for education, Johnston recently completed his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) at Wayne State University.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead this program and continue serving the city of Detroit through junior college football. This is a place where faith, discipline, and opportunity come together, and we’re committed to developing young men academically, athletically, and personally. I’m excited for what’s ahead and for the impact this program can continue to have," stated Johnston.
